Data Model

  • Stations — 607 tidal stations around the UK with metadata (name, country, coordinates, type).
  • Tidal Events — High Water (HW) and Low Water (LW) events with predicted times and heights.

Key Patterns

  • Station IDs are alphanumeric strings (e.g. '0001', '0113').
  • Predictions cover the current day plus six days of HW/LW events.
  • All times are in GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) — BST is never applied.
  • Coordinates follow geoJSON convention: longitude first, then latitude.
  • Some stations only have High Water data (e.g. Rye Harbour dries out at low water).
  • Some south coast stations may show 4 high waters per day due to double-HW effects.
  • After the first station-scoped call, tools remember the last station_id on the credential for 24 hours — omit station_id on follow-up tidal-event calls when continuing the same station.

Snapshot caching

  • Station catalog responses are cached per credential. Filter by name locally without a new upstream call. Use refresh=true only when the user explicitly wants a fresh catalog pull.
  • Tidal event tools cache upstream payloads per (station_id, duration/start_date) fingerprint. Use allow_stale=true (default) to reuse cached tides when data is past fresh TTL.

Gotchas

  • Fair use: Upstream limits apply — pace repeat calls; agents rarely see throughput errors.
  • GMT only: All predicted times are GMT. Consumers must handle BST conversion.
  • Channel Islands excluded: Tidal data for Channel Island stations is not available.
  • Attribution: Every response includes Crown copyright attribution — preserve it when quoting data.
