EA Flood Warnings

Environment Agency API providing real-time flood warning and alert data for England. No authentication required.

Data Model

• Flood Warning — Active warning/alert with severity, message text, and timestamps.
• Flood Area — Geographic region to which warnings/alerts apply. Two types: Flood Alert Areas (larger catchments) and Flood Warning Areas (specific communities).
• Severity Levels — 1: Severe Flood Warning (danger to life), 2: Flood Warning (flooding expected), 3: Flood Alert (flooding possible), 4: Warning no longer in force.

Key Fields

• floodAreaID / notation — Unique code for the flood area (e.g. "053FWFPUWI06")
• severity — Human-readable severity string
• severityLevel — Numeric severity (1-4, lower = more severe)
• message — Full warning message text from EA
• timeRaised / timeMessageChanged — ISO 8601 timestamps
• eaAreaName — EA administrative area (e.g. "Wessex", "Thames")

Gotchas

• Transient warnings: Retired warnings disappear from active listings—do not assume old ids stay resolvable forever.
• Flood areas are permanent: Unlike warnings, flood area definitions are stable geographic boundaries.
• isTidal: Boolean flag distinguishing tidal from river/groundwater warnings.
• Pagination: Use _limit and _offset when walking large collections.

Typical workflow

1. List active flood warnings (optionally filter by severity or county).
2. Browse flood warning areas to resolve area notation/IDs.
3. Fetch full warning message, severity history, and area geography for a chosen area ID.
